Producer's Statement
Media is Powerful
Language. An essential element in our daily lives, the tool to share our voices with the world, and the core of our identities. This web documentary explores how the power dynamics in language can be shifted from language as a historical tool for oppression, to language as a tool for empowerment, identity embrace, and cultural revitalization.
Through the voices of people from different linguistic communities from the core of South America to Vermont, Language POWER showcases the importance of language justice, arguing why it should be approached from within to make a strong impact on people's lives.
The silent but persistent fight of many underrepresented linguistic communities continues, often ignored and disregarded. Language POWER sheds light on these fights, exploring the intersection of language, cultural identity, social inequity, and colonialism.
From a doctor's appointment to the classroom, from commuting to grocery shopping, from the north to the south, inside and out... language matters.
Social Justice Statement
As media producers, we have a tremendous responsibility on our hands. We are part of a whole power dynamic of soft power that affects the opportunities, well-being, and lives of people.
With Language POWER, I intend to responsibly exercise my duty of social justice as a media producer by exposing audiences to issues of language justice in Vermont, Peru, and beyond.
Working on this documentary has given me great insight into the power dynamics within and through language. Language has been historically used as a tool for oppression and cultural erasure, yet it holds massive potential for empowerment and revitalization. Linguistic diversity is always an asset, never a burden.
